ALEISTER CROWLEY MAGICK IN THEORY AND PRACTICE

abra describes the operation of the great work. it may be stated without unfairness, as a rough general principle, that the farther from original equality are the two sides of the equation, the more difficult is the operation to perform. thus, to take the case of the personal operation symbolized by the grades, it is harder to become a neophyte, 1 degree= 10square, than to pass from that grade to zelator, 2 degree= 9square. initiation is, therefore, progressively easier, in a certain sense, after the first step is taken. but (especially after the passing of tiphareth) the distance between grade and grade increases as it were by a geometrical progression with an enormously high factor, which itself progresses<hierarchy of the grades should be "d

ecognizable. 150 there are also planes corresponding to various religions past and present, all of which have their peculiar unity. it is of the utmost importance to the "clairvoyant" or "traveler in the fine body" to be able to find his way to any desired plane, and operate therein as its ruler. the neophyte of a. a. is examined most strictly in this practice before he is passed to the degree of zelator. in "rising on the planes" one must usually pass clear through the astral to the spiritual. some will be unable to do this. the "fine body" which is good enough to subsist on lower planes, a shadow among shadows, will fail to penetrate the higher strata. it requires a great development of this body, and an intense infusion of the highest spiritual constituents of man, before he can pierce

neophyte, and it is thus that growth and advancement proceeds. the speeches of the officers deal almost exclusively with the knowledge pertaining to that element and grade, and excerpts from fragmentary remains of the ancient mysteries and from certain of the books of the qabalah do much towards producing an impressive atmosphere. the element offered for the work of transmutation in the grade of zelator is the introduction 29 earthy part of the candidate. the ritual symbolically admits him to the first rung of that mighty ladder whose heights are obscured in the light above. this first rung is the lowest sphere of the conventional tree of life, malkuth, the sanctum regnum. to it are ascribed the first grade of zelator, and the element of earth. herein, after the earth elementals are invok

precede and follow, is symptomatic of an intellectual confusion of function. it is rather as if one said that milk is more virtuous than friday- which, naturally, is absurd. yet similar comparisons in magical matters are constantly being made without exciting ridicule. it is obvious that different categories may not be so compared. the purpose of the neophyte ritual is quite distinct from that of zelator, and it is mistaken policy to compare them. what rightly could be asked is whether the zelator and the other elemental grades accomplish what they purport to do. that is another matter. the concensus of experienceaopinion is on the whole that they do, and i am content for the time being to accept that authority. the candidate by these gradgs is duly prepared, so it is argued, to enter the

ken just as quickly as the candidate, at the discretion of the chiefs, desired. there were no requirements other than to indicate by examination that the appropriate meditations had been performed and certain items of qabalistic knowledge necessary to the magical routine committed to memory <51> before proceeding further in the analysis of the grades, there is one rather fine prose passage in the zelator grade which must be given here- a passage of beauty, high eloquence, and lofty significance "and tetragrammaton 30 the golden dawn placed kerubim at the east of the garden of eden and a flaming sword which turned every way to keep the path of the tree of life, for he has created nature that man being cast out of eden may not fall into the void. he has bound man with the stars as with a cha
