s of the zodiac, the planets, and the elements. now there are twelve signs, seven planets, and four elements, making twenty-three symbols in all. how are these to be fitted on to the twenty-two paths? herein is another "blind" but the solution is simple. upon the physical plane [page 24] we are ourselves in the element of earth, therefore that symbol does not appear upon the paths which lead into the unseen. remove this, and we are left with twenty-two symbols, which fit accurately and, correctly placed, are found to correspond perfectly with the tarot trumps, each elucidating the other in the most remarkabl& fashion, and giving the keys to esoteric astrology and tarot divination. 14. the essence of each path is to be found in the fact that it connects two of the sephiroth, and we can only

rience of it at one remove. that is to say, although we cannot know its nature, we know its effects, in the same way as we are ignorant of the nature of electricity yet are able to turn it to good account in our lives, and from our experience of its effects we are able to come to certain conclusions concerning some at least of the qualities it must possess. those who have penetrated furthest into the unseen have given us symbolic descriptions by means of which we may turn our minds in the direction of the absolute, even if we cannot reach it. they have spoken of negative existence as light "ain soph aur, the limitless light" they have spoken of the first manifest as sound "in the beginning was the word" i remember once hearing a man, who was an adept if ever there was one, say "if you want

s. now there are twelve signs in the zodiac, seven planets, and four elements, making in all twenty-three symbols. how are these to be arranged on twenty-two paths? here is another qabalistic blind to puzzle the uninitiated. the answer is quite simple when it is known. our consciousness being in the element of earth, we do not need the symbol of earth in our calculations when we make contact with the unseen, so we leave it out and then find ourselves with the correct set of correspondences. malkuth is all the earth we need for practical purposes [page 72] the third set of symbols to go upon the paths are the twenty-two trumps or major arcana of the tarot pack. with these three sets of symbols and the colours of the four colour scales, our major symbolism is complete; the minor symbolism co

, working from malkuth up the tree. the instructions given in each grade concern the symbolism and forces of the sphere to which it refers and the paths that equilibrate it. the sign and word of the grade are used when treading these paths in the spirit-vision or projecting by them on the astral plane. consequently the initiate is able to move with accuracy and certainty into whatsoever sphere of the unseen he desires to penetrate, and to countercheck ah beings he meets and all visions he sees, for he knows what the colours of the paths are in all four scales, and he checks his vision by these. if he is working up the thirty-second path of saturn, whose colours are all in the scmbre hues of indigo, dark blue and black, he knows that something is amiss if a scarlet-robed figure presents its

DION FORTUNE PSYCHIC SELF DEFENSE

chic assault is not hearing the reverberation of his own dissociated complexes. the differential diagnosis between hysteria, insanity and psychic attack is an exceedingly delicate and difficult operation, for so frequently a case is not clear-cut, more than one element being present; a severe psychic attack causing a mental breakdown, and a mental breakdown laying its victim open to invasion from the unseen. all these factors have to be borne in mind when investigating an alleged occult attack, and it shall be my task in these pages not only to indicate the methods of occult defence, but also to show the methods of differential diagnosis. it is very necessary, with so much occult knowledge about, that people should know an occult attack when they see it. these things are much more common t

, who can enter into this invisible world as a diver descends to the ocean-bed. there are also times when, as happens to a land when the sea-dykes break, the invisible forces flow in upon us and swamp our lives. normally this does not occur. we are protected by our very incapacity to perceive these invisible forces. there are four conditions, however, in which the veil may be rent and we may meet the unseen. we may find ourselves in a place where these forces are concentrated. we may meet people who are handling these forces. we may ourselves go out to meet the unseen, led by our interest in it, and get out of our depth before we know where we are; or we may fall victim to certain pathological conditions which rend the veil. the threshold of the unseen is a treacherous coast on which to ba

sult is disastrous for us, for we have broken a natural law; but they are not out to attack us, any more than we are out to attack them. we must face the fact, however, that men and women with knowledge of these things, have, both in the past and in the present, used that knowledge unscrupulously, and that we may find our selves involved in the results of their actions. it may safely be said that the unseen is only evil and inimical to humanity when it has been corrupted and perverted by the activities of these unscrupulous men and women, whom initiates call adepts of the left-hand path. we must consider the outward and visible signs of psychic attack before we are in a position to analyse the nature of such attacks and indicate their source of origin. it is a fundamental rule that diagnos

eive at his hands a severe shock. so it may be with many an occult attack. the person from whom it emanates may not have originated it. therefore we should never respond to attack by attack, thus bringing ourselves down to the moral level of our attackers, but rely upon more humane methods, which are, in reality, equally effectual and far less dangerous to handle. people also come into touch with the unseen through the influence of places. someone who is not actually psychic, but who is sufficiently sensitive to perceive the invisible forces subconsciously, may go to a place where they are concentrated at a high tension. normally, although we move in the midst of these forces (for they sustain our universe, we are oblivious of them. where they are concentrated, however, unless we are very

eed, this author is exceedingly fond of drawing his inspiration from the deva kingdom, and has some most interesting studies of the subject scattered through his books. any organic geographical unit develops something of an oversoul, and where the differentiation is marked, the over soul may become a very definite entity. if there are among the inhabitants of the district any who are sensitive to the unseen, they may form either an affinity or a repulsion for this oversoul. a great forest has a very marked personality, and there are few white men who can resist its influence, becoming markedly changed and de-humanised if exposed to it for long periods without the companionship of others of their race. natives, on the other hand, seem to enter into it and be part of it. it is well known how

is the same, however- a discrepancy between the force and form with the consequent inability to maintain a central, reasoned, directing control. the technique of the occult discipline is largely directed towards maintaining control of the disparate forces, compensating the sensitiveness of the psychic, and protecting him from unwanted impressions. it is never well to learn how to open the door of the unseen unless at the same time one learns how to close and latch it. as was noted in the introduction, it is comparatively seldom that the unseen comes in search of human beings. as the caterpillar told alice concerning the puppy-dog "you let it alone, and it will let you alone" but if we begin to study occultism, or even to dabble in it, sooner or later we are liable to obtain results, provid

ic insanity, which proceeds to its logical conclusion. it is for this reason that a neurotic, although he may suffer severely, seldom has a complete breakdown unless he is sure of the necessities of life. the self-preservation instinct keeps him on his feet. having considered the physical and subjective bases of mental disturbances, we are now in a position to assess accurately the part played by the unseen. what happens when a neurotic takes up occultism? we can best answer this question by considering what happens when a normal person takes up occultism. he learns for the first time of the existence of the invisible worlds and begins to think about them. immediately he does this he comes into touch with them. at first he may not be able to perceive them consciously; nevertheless he is fe

he learns for the first time of the existence of the invisible worlds and begins to think about them. immediately he does this he comes into touch with them. at first he may not be able to perceive them consciously; nevertheless he is feeling them subconsciously and they are affecting him. his life shows this to the close observer in a thousand ways. there are great forces moving like currents in the unseen and we are drawn into these according to our temperamental affinity for them. the violent personality is drawn into the current of mars, the emotional, suggestible one into the sphere of luna. the influences of these spheres play upon them. now the occultist working under a proper system, knowing that he has got to meet these forces sooner or later, picks them up one by one voluntarily

ient gets a chance to pull himself together and the evil influences are undermined. a courageous patient, who is co-operating intelligently, will seldom have to be exorcised more than three times provided material conditions are favourable. i have seen cases cleared by a single exorcism, and remaining well indefinitely so long as the patient obeyed instructions and had nothing whatever to do with the unseen, neither reading books upon occultism nor associating with people who were interested in such subjects; and i have also seen the abyss re-establish its influence when the patient disobeyed instructions and re-awakened the old vibrations. we need to realise that the human consciousness is not a closed vessel, but like the body, has a continual intake and output. the cosmic forces are cir

, and these were published in the occult review. my writing is largely inspirational, a great deal "coming through" of which i have no previous knowledge, and in this particular case i evidently shot a great deal better than i knew, and got myself into serious trouble. my first intimation of it was a sense of uneasiness and restlessness. next came a feeling as if the barriers between the seen and the unseen were full of rifts and i kept on getting glimpses of the astral mingling with my waking consciousness. this, for me, is unaccustomed, for i am not naturally psychic, and in the technique in which i was trained we are taught to keep the different levels of consciousness strictly separate and to use a specific method for opening and closing the gates. consequently one seldom gets spontane

this operation under the circumstances, for my attacker was of much higher grade than i was, and could come through any seals i might set. however, it afforded protection against minor unpleasantness. the method of making these astral journeys is highly technical, and i cannot enter upon it here. in the language of psychology, it is auto-hypnosis by means of a symbol. the symbol acts as a door to the unseen. according to the symbol chosen will be the section of the unseen to which access is obtained. the trained initiate, therefore, does not wander on the astral like an uneasy ghost, but comes and goes by well-known corridors. my enemy's task was therefore not a difficult one; for she knew about the time i must make this journey and the symbol i must use in order to get out of the body. i

ble to unidentified psychic influences. where ignorance is bliss 'tis folly to be wise is truer in psychic matters than anywhere else. never open the eyes of your patient to a danger for which you cannot give him an effectual defence. the surgeon who is about to operate covers his instruments with a cloth so that the patient shall not see them. the wise occultist does the same. do not forget that the unseen is always suspect to the uninitiated. having conducted an enquiry along the lines laid down in the previous pages, you should have acquired a considerable amount of material for investigation. examine it carefully for correlations of cause and effect. note if any exacerbation of the trouble is regularly associated with any incident, place, or person. consider also the various type-cases

than our physical lives, another voice makes itself heard, the voice of the bright angel. i have never known this to occur when a man was fighting simply for his physical life. to those who see beyond the veil, death is no great evil; but in times of spiritual crisis, when the very self is being swept away, then it is that the cry of the soul is heard, and something manifests out of the mists of the unseen, manifests in a form that is comprehensible to the one who calls. whether intense stress induces a temporary expansion of consciousness, a fugitive psychism, or whether a being of its own volition passes through the veil and manifests, i do not know; there are never any details available of these incidents. they take place only in times of dire stress and go as swiftly as they came, lea

in trouble of any sort. at his request she wrote to me to enquire how i was faring, but mentioned no names, and i, not realising the significance of the incident, returned a non-committal answer. he heard my story and told me to leave the matter in his hands, which i did. this is a queer enough story of coincidence, but the sequel is even queerer. after leaving colonel y, i enquired once more of the unseen whether i should take any further steps. the reply came through that for the present i was to do nothing, but that i would be told when further action was to be taken. i learnt afterwards that x. had left the country a few days after my interview with colonel y. nothing happened for about five months, and then one evening when i was sitting over my fire in the dusk i distinctly heard th

ion, let me emphasize. of course, there are many other ironclad systems of thought without occult bases which have been imposed upon the public mind from time to time, such as communism, fascism, or capitalism, but these at least function under the pretence of ministering to the bodies of mankind rather than to the good of the soul, whatever that might be. the domain of witchcraft is the realm of the unseen and the point at which it impinges upon man's psyche, and as it is in this very same area that the various churches have sought to dabble their fingers, it is with these institutions that we witches take issue in principle. ironically, you will find that all the innovators and founders of said religions were revolutionaries in their time who took issue with their parent religions and we

d often mended. printing made the movable letters prolific. thenceforth the orator spoke almost visibly to listening nations; and the author wrote, like the pope, his cumenic decrees _urbi et orbi, and ordered them to be posted up in all the market-places; remaining, if he chose, impervious to human sight. the doom of tyrannies was thenceforth sealed. satire and invective became potent as armies. the unseen hands of the juniuses could launch the thunderbolts, and make the ministers tremble. one whisper from this giant fills the earth as easily as demosthenes filled the agora. it will soon be heard at the antipodes as easily as in the next street. it travels with the lightning under the oceans. it makes the mass one man, speaks to it in the same common language, and elicits a sure and singl

in analogy with his assumed character, he should submit to _all_ the conditions of visible existence. in death, as in life, isis and osiris were patterns and precursors of mankind; their sepulchres stood within the temples of the superior gods; yet though their remains might be entombed at memphis or abydus, their divinity was unimpeached, and they either shone as luminaries in the heavens, or in the unseen world presided over the futurity of the disembodied spirits whom death had brought nearer to them. the notion of a dying god, so frequent in oriental legend, and of which we have already said much in former degrees, was the natural inference from a literal interpretation of nature-worship; since nature, which in the vicissitudes of the seasons seems to undergo a dissolution, was to the

already said much in former degrees, was the natural inference from a literal interpretation of nature-worship; since nature, which in the vicissitudes of the seasons seems to undergo a dissolution, was to the earliest religionists the express image of the deity, and at a remote period one and the same with the "varied god" whose attributes were seen not only in its vitality, but in its changes. the unseen mover of the universe was rashly identified with its obvious fluctuations. the speculative deity suggested by the drama of nature, was worshipped with imitative and sympathetic rites. a period of mourning about the autumnal equinox, and of joy at the return of spring, was almost universal. phrygians and paphlagonians, b otians, and even athenians, were all more or less attached to such

PATH OF INITIATION

o take into account that the true purpose of "traditional groups" is not to build membership and share rituals. the purpose of a serious spiritual grouping is to achieve wisdom and illumination. no wise, thinking person would ever make the claim that illumination and wisdom only come from membership in a special group. in truth, illumination and wisdom come from the soul of the world itself, from the unseen worlds, from spiritual beings, from other mysterious forces, and from within. what "groups" do, is merely speak a symbolic language, hoping to channel these very things "groups" do not and cannot originate these things, nor make them happen in their members with any certainty. groups may serve some useful purposes, but without members coming to them already aware of the deeper origin of

nsformation, great and timeless realities that no human being or group can claim a monopoly on, as they underlie all works of art, culture, and inspiration. the path of initiation, in traditional folklore, as well as (more generally) in the western mystery tradition, has several stages, that manifest in outward events, but are primarily innerworld realities: 1. the "reaching out" to the powers of the unseen world; the "petition" at the hollow hill or the faery mound, a stage by which the limitations of the human being are defined through perception and understanding, and the "leap of faith" or the "longing for the beyond" is felt and expressed, from human to what is beyond human; this is the earth or land experience. 2. the 'year and a day' period (or a set period of a fixed time) of inter

ul is now united with the spirit) and it causes the special modes of perception and understanding to open in the candidate (gradually) that are the source of many mythical seership abilities and the like "magical" abilities (and i hate to use that term) are also sometimes gained, though this is a far more poetic idea than the term "magic" expresses. knowledge and real wisdom, direct experience of the unseen world, and the ability to "reach into" the self, or the depths, to directly experience and mediate extra-sensory reality, causes what seem to be like "powers" or abilities to understand and influence some events in life. but this is only a tiny matter of a greater growth. the five-fold initiatory pattern leads to internal transformation, a "road change" from the straight road of the com

out exception. this entire pattern can be realized through working groups that have the means and understanding to really bring about these five transformations, but at heart, all of these transformations (and whatever symbols people use to represent them in the outer world) are not physical, blunt realities; they are internal, otherworldly mysteries that emerge through all things. they come from the unseen. a group is very unique and special indeed if it can really bring about these transformations in a systematic, direct way- most groups cannot, because 99% of people have not gone past the first one or two "steps" on the initiatory path. most people who call themselves occultists have not even gone past the first. luckily, a person can walk this entire path alone. in fact, even before yo
