there is no question of depriving oneself of anything one wants. the process is rather that of learning to discard what one thought one wanted in the darkness before the dawn of the discovery of the real object of one's passion. hence, note well! concentration has reduced our moral obligations to their simplest terms: there is a single standard to which everything is to be referred. to hell with the pope! if lobster newburg upsets your digestion- and good digestion is necessary to your practice- then you do not eat lobster newburg. unless this is clearly understood, the yogi will constantly be side-tracked by the sophistications of religious and moral fanatics. to hell with the archbishops! 8. you will readily appreciate that to undertake a course of this kind requires careful planning. y

and one of the most remarkable things about it is that its greatest and most important achievements have been in the domain of science and philosophy. it has done nothing in religion; or, rather, where it has meddled with religion it has only done harm. what a mistake! and why? for the simple reason that it was in a position to take no notice of religion; all these matters were decided for it by the pope, or by the councils of the church, and the society was therefore able to free itself from the perplexities of religion, in exactly the same way as the novice obtains complete freedom from his moral responsibilities by sinking his personal phantasies in the will of the superior. 6. i should like to mention here that the spiritual exercises of st. ignatius are in their essence really admira

ficiently cosmic in scope to resist internal forces. having attained the higher planes by practice of these exercises, they found that the original purpose of the society was not really adequate to their powers; they were, so to speak, over-engined. they stupidly invaded the spiritual sphere of the other authorities whom they were founded to support, and thus we see them actually quarrelling with the pope, while failing signally to obtain possession of the papacy. being thus thwarted in their endeavours, and confused in their purpose, they redoubled the ardour of their exercises; and it is one of the characteristics of all spiritual exercises, if honestly and efficiently performed, that they constantly lead you on to higher planes, where all dogmatic considerations, all intellectual concep

ful to be bullied, and too good business men to be fooled into killing the goose that laid the golden eggs. so the only motive available was fear, and in those ages where ignorance was fostered with infinite devotion, it was even easier to create a scare about bogies than our propaganda in the recent scrap found it. i was in venice just before the war, when halley s comet was around, and although the pope himself sprinkled holy water over the comet, and sent it his special benediction and told the people it would do no harm, in his most ex cathedra manner, the venetians gathered themselves in panic-stricken crowds in the square of st. mark and waited, howling, for the end of the world. it was accordingly easy enough to associate the pursuit of knowledge with the most abominable crimes, rea

patrizi says that a philosopher nowadays is thought to be one who does not believe in god. the reason for this is that the only philosophy studied is that of aristotle which denies the omnipotence and providence of god. yet hermes said that without philosophy it is impossible to be pious, and therefore patrizi has tried to discover a truer philosophy by which we might return to god. he hopes that the pope and his successors will adopt this religious philosophy and cause it to be taught everywhere. he asks why those parts of aristotle's philosophy which are hostile to god are studied, when a hermetic treatise contains more philosophy than all the works of aristotle put together. many of plato's dialogues should also be taught publicly; also plotinus, proclus and the early fathers. but the s

615, one of the fathers of the culdeen church, preached the christian gospel to the picts and the scots. later, in the company of twelve monks, he arrived in france, where he founded the luxeil abbey. in 613 he also established the monastery of bobbio in italy, where he died. columban wrote a monastic rule urging asceticism. he declared the preeminence of the roman pontiff, but not his authority "the pope" he wrote "is not someone who holds the keys to absolute truth and whose words carry the seal of the holy ghost. he is a bishop, a weak man whom one can advise and rebuke. above the authority of rome there is the authority of the truth" the culdees were connected with king athelstan, who played a large role in the legendary history of freemasonry. in 936 this king, in his march against th

of the order to the holy see and removed them from the authority of the patriarch of jerusalem and the prelates of other countries. it also gave the order complete authority to institute priests and chaplains to serve its churches* shortly afterward, another bull, this one issued by gregory viii in 1188, declared that the templars did not have to acknowledge the supremacy of any bishop other than the pope. this enabled them to avoid the pastoral authority of the bishop in paris. by virtue of these privileges, the order not only was spared the necessity of episcopal visits, but it also assumed visitation and jurisdictional rights over the dependent parishes of its commanderies, except for the ordinances of diocesen bishop's concerning the management of souls and the administration of sacram

. religion, considered solely as a physiological fact, is the revelation and satisfaction of a necessity of souls. its existence is a scientific fact; to deny it, would be to deny humanity itself. the rose-croix adepts respected the dominant, hierarchical, and revealed religion. consequently they could no more be the enemies of the papacy than of legitimate monarchy; and if they conspired against the popes and kings, it was because they considered them personally as apostates from duty and supreme favorers of anarchy. what, in fact, is a despot, spiritual or temporal, but a crowned anarchist? one of the magnificent pantacles that express the esoteric and unutterable part of science, is a rose of light, in the centre of which a human form extends its arms in the form of a cross. commentarie
