nd the factors with which each has had to work have been the same. though the mind of the eastern thinker may run to creative imagery and that of the western worker to creative scientific achievement, yet the world into which they enter is curiously the same; the instrument of thought which they employ is called the "mind" in the west and "mind-stuff (chitta) in the east; both use the language of symbology to express their conclusions and both reach the point where words prove futile to embody the intuited possibilities. dr. jung, one of the people who is seeking to bring these hitherto discordant elements together, touches on this in the following extract from his commentary on an ancient chinese writing. he says "western consciousness is by no means consciousness in general, but rather a

. we are slowly passing into this new sign. for more than two thousand years its potencies and forces will play upon the race and will establish the new types, foster the new expansions of consciousness, and lead man on to a practical realisation of brotherhood. it is interesting to note how it was that the energies playing upon our planet when the sun was in aries, the ram, produced in religious symbology the emphasis of the goat or ram, and how in our present age of pisces, the fishes, those influences have coloured our christian symbology so that the fish preponderates in our new testament and in our eschatological symbology. the new incoming rays, energies and influences must surely be destined to produce equal effects, not only in the realm of physical phenomena but also in the world

it conveys an aspect of a major truth. just as the birth of a child is an entrance into light, literally speaking, and the beginning of an entirely new way of life, so each successive initiation is in an exactly similar manner an entrance into light, involving the revelation of a different world to the one hitherto known, and the undergoing of entirely new experiences. if students would keep this symbology and this definition carefully in mind, they would arrive at a keener concept of the processes which lie ahead of them. this is particularly true in connection with this first initiation; the analogy holds good from the very dawn of history, where humanity is considered. in ancient lemuria, with the coming in of the mental idea and mechanism, the low grade animal life (which, to a certain

began to flourish; colour and beauty were registered. in our more modern aryan race, the light has revealed the world of thought and has brought us to a synthesis of the senses; these senses were developed in earlier cycles of human living. each of these three races, in a mysterious manner, has a correspondence on a racial scale to the first three initiations. today, as we enter the new era, the symbology of the fourth initiation, that of the renunciation, has application; men face the necessity of renouncing the material values and of substituting the spiritual. the ferment of the initiation process goes on all the time, undermining the materialism of the race of men, revealing more and more of the reality underlying the phenomenal world (the only world recognised by the lemurians) and a

an or solar, small or great, organic or inorganic, lies a subjective world of forces which is responsible for the outer form. behind the outer material shell is to be found a vast empire of being, and it is into this world of living energies that both religion and science are now penetrating. everything outer and tangible is a symbol of inner creative forces and it is this idea that underlies all symbology. a symbol is an outer and visible form of an inner and spiritual reality. it is with this interplay of the outer form and the inner life [11] that hercules wrestles. he knew himself to be the form, the symbol, for the dominance of the lower material nature made its presence felt with the facility of agelong expression. at the same time he knew that his problem was to express spiritual be

t of a great ancient religion. like every product of these ancient and elaborately perfected systems, these rites are full of meaning, or rather of meanings; for in egypt we attributed to them a fourfold signification. since every detail is thus full of import, it is obvious that nothing should ever be changed without the greatest care, and only then by those who know its full intent, so that the symbology of the whole may not be spoiled. 38. the egyptian outlook 39. it is exceedingly difficult to explain to twentieth century readers all that this work meant to us in the sunny land of khem; but i will try to describe the four layers of interpretation as they were taught when i myself lived there. 40. the first idea of its meaning was that it conveyed to us and symbolized in action the way

he urn is continued through the disc, and makes a projection above the disc which is a segment of a sphere, though this was of course not visible to anyone looking up from the foot of the pillar. it would be more correct to say that the form suggested is not actually a sphere but rather an oblate spheroid, and in the original stone pillar which occupied a similar place in the egyptian temple, the symbology of which was copied by the tyrian artificer, this somewhat unusual form was undoubtedly intentional, and was adopted in order to give an idea of the true shape of the earth, which was perfectly well known in ancient egypt. as will be seen in a later chapter, the egyptians were quite familiar with the exact measurements of the earth, but in the indication of it in the spheroid of the pill

le amount of trouble to carry out his design exactly as he wanted it. so far as the investigators were able to see, his work was based entirely upon a traditional account of the stone egyptian pillars, which had been handed down from the time of moses. it did not appear that he had any clear idea of the meaning of all these strange decorations, though moses knew perfectly well the whole system of symbology which lay behind it. 174. it is to be understood that all this varied orna-mentation was not arranged in basso-relievo, as would be expected in a casting; on the contrary it stood out boldly from the face of the pillar, many of the flowers being connected with it only by a comparatively thin stalk of considerable length. some indication of the patience and care which the artist exhibited

e then indicates that he ascended or rose again. the symbol in the centre- that of the double axe- is that of the most high god; so the complete glyph is thus a kind of symbolic creed, which for those who drew it affirmed their faith in the descent of the deity into matter and his final triumphant ascension from it: gdescended he; ascended he h. if we were to interpret it along lines of christian symbology we might call it the emblem of the crucified and triumphant christ; but it is also a token of the whole method of evolution. 261. this device appears in many places. it is to be seen in the museum of the louvre in paris, engraved upon a chaldaean intaglio made of green jasper. it is also to be found on the walls of some very old churches in devonshire and cornwall in england, where it mu

if he leaves the order. 451. divisions of the ceremony 452. we now come to the consideration of the cere-mony by which the candidate is admitted to freemasonry, a ceremony which is commonly called his initiation. we must recognize from the beginning that this ceremony is no mere form; first because it produces definite inner effects, and secondly, because it contains a great deal of most valuable symbology, the understanding and application of which will be of great moment in the candidate fs future life. 453. as i have stated earlier in the book, one chief object of freemasonry is to train its members for the work which they have to do in the world, and therefore to cultivate within them the qualities necessary for that work. the various degrees in masonry are all stages in that training;

militude of the divine light of god fs love through which and in which we have our being. 530. the e c1 i c s 531. on being restored to the blessing of light, the eye of the new a. falls upon the t c g c e c l c s in freemasonry. the furniture of the lodge here reappears under this new name, but as we have already discussed the matter in chapter iii, we need not repeat here the explanation of the symbology involved. 532. in the co-masonic ritual the r.w.m. now raises the newly-made brother to his feet and turns him round so that he sees for the first time the brn. with their s c s at the carry. he explains to him that he must not regard this martial display as a menace, but as a symbol of the protection with which freemasonry henceforth surrounds him. the brn. then return to their seats. 5

nd his two wardens, symbolizing respectively wisdom, strength and beauty or harmony. these have already been explained in chapter ii. in the masculine ritual this explanation of the three columns is put somewhat differently, as they are there described as the three lesser lights, which are explained to be the sun, the moon and the master of the lodge. this connects up modern masonry with much old symbology in which the moon and the sun largely figure. 534. the s c and p c 535. in this situation the r.w.m. also instructs the n. in the s c s of this degree, a s c, a g c and a w c the s c in this degree is often supposed to be related to the p c mentioned in the o, but the s c, existed long before the p c, which was invented to fit it. among the egyptians the same p c existed, and even before

e in his magnificence, except in the case of men far advanced on the road of evolution. now, in the symbolism of this degree, the personality has seen with all clearness that the purpose of life is to serve the higher; he throws himself into the task with vigour and so gives some of his definiteness to make the purpose of the ego clear to himself; he makes a call to the warrior within, to use the symbology of light on the path. 582. the opening 583. while the preparation of the c. is taking place the r.w.m. once more calls upon the brn. to assist him in opening the lodge, but this time in the second degree; and yet again he begins with the universal question, but very slightly varied: gwhat is the first care of every f.c.f? h and he receives the invariable answer: gto prove the lodge close

e seen from the above that the deities, or rather forms of deity, osiris, isis and horus were already familiar to the people, and the world teacher made it part of his work to draw their attention to the true meaning of the three persons. at what time knowledge of these three aspects of god was introduced into the land we do not know, but at the date of our experience they had their places in the symbology of the mysteries. 64. isis and osiris 65. isis, to whom the lesser mysteries were ascribed, was not only the universal feminine principle expressed in nature, but also a real and very lofty being, just as the christ is the universal life, the second logos, and also a high official of the occult hierarchy. she by virtue of her high development and office was able to represent the feminine
