iversity, producing a unity, is everywhere to be seen; this fact must constantly be borne in mind by the occult student when studying the subhuman forms of existence. there is a distinct danger in all tabulations, for they tend to the forming of hard and fast divisions, whereas unity pervades all. among the manipulating devas of the lowest level of the dense physical plane are to be found certain subterranean forms of existence, of which hints are to be found in the ancient and occult books. there is to be found in the very bowels of the earth, an evolution of a peculiar nature, with a close resemblance to the human. they have bodies of a peculiarly gross kind, which might be regarded as distinctly physical as we understand the term. they dwell in settlements, or groups, under a form of go

nking of many students. natural law is the inevitable working out upon the physical plane of forces and energies which have long been generated. people are apt to think that these must lie outside of human control and constitute part of the inscrutable will of god, and that with them man has naught to do. when it is realised that certain aspects of natural law are concerned purely with the forces subterranean, superficial and aerial of our planet, the premise will be seen as correct in the present condition of the mental attitudes of the race and will remain so for a very long time. there are, nevertheless, causes and effects which can come under the category of natural law which are yet not so far removed from human control. for ages man has generated energies which must inevitably produc

which should unitedly create a beautiful whole and not provide barriers of separativeness as is today the case. i finally brought to the attention of the public the idea that the externalisation of the hierarchy was a major hierarchical project, for which due preparation would have to be made. 3. the world war then reached a final stage; the first stage was from 1914-1918; it then proceeded in a subterranean fashion, only to erupt once more in 1939, continuing with extreme fierceness and cruelty till 1945, when the power to continue the fight ended and the atomic bomb wrote finis to the world chapter of disaster. that atomic bomb (though used only twice destructively) ended the resistance of the powers of evil because its potency is predominantly etheric. its uses are twofold at this time

across and three feet thick, there yawned before the avid searchers a section of shallow limestone hollowing worn more than fifty million years ago by the trickling ground waters of a bygone tropic world. the hollowed layer was not more than seven or eight feet deep but extended off indefinitely in all directions and had a fresh, slightly moving air which suggested its membership in an extensive subterranean system. its roof and floor were abundantly equipped with large stalactites and stalagmites, some of which met in columnar form: but important above all else was the vast deposit of shells and bones, which in places nearly choked the passage. washed down from unknown jungles of mesozoic tree ferns and fungi, and forests of tertiary cycads, fan palms, and primitive angiosperms, this oss

ing the old ones had formerly been reluctant to do. the great river was now lifeless, and the upper sea had lost most of its denizens except the seals and whales. all the birds had flown away, save only the great, grotesque penguins. what had happened afterward we could only guess. how long had the new sea-cavern city survived? was it still down there, a stony corpse in eternal blackness? had the subterranean waters frozen at last? to what fate had the ocean-bottom cities of the outer world been delivered? had any of the old ones shifted north ahead of the creeping ice cap? existing geology shows no trace of their presence. had the frightful mi-go been still a menace in the outer land world of the north? could one be sure of what might or might not linger, even to this day, in the lightles

hed. slightly beyond this point we noticed a decided increase in the size and number of the side galleries, and concluded that the densely honeycombed region beneath the higher foothills must now have been reached. the nameless scent was now curiously mixed with another and scarcely less offensive odor- of what nature we could not guess, though we thought of decaying organisms and perhaps unknown subterranean fungi. then came a startling expansion of the tunnel for which the carvings had not prepared us- a broadening and rising into a lofty, natural-looking elliptical cavern with a level floor, some seventy-five feet long and fifty broad, and with many immense side passages leading away into cryptical darkness. though this cavern was natural in appearance, an inspection with both torches s

be considered as the radius of an imaginary circle, the length of the circumference of such a circle will be found to equal the sum of the base lines of the four sides of the pyramid. if the passage leading to the king's chamber and the queen's chamber was sealed up thousands of years before the christian era, those later admitted into the pyramid mysteries must have received their initiations in subterranean galleries now unknown. without such galleries there could have been no possible means of ingress or egress, since the single surface entrance was completely dosed with casing stones. if not blocked by the mass of the sphinx or concealed in some part of that image, the secret entrance may be either in one of the adjacent temples or upon the sides of the limestone plateau. attention is

eans of getting into the upper chambers. the ramp stone having been set in a bed of plaster, the robbers were forced to break through it, leaving a jagged opening. mr. dupr, an architect who has spent years investigating the pyramids, differs from smyth, however, in that he believes the well itself to be a robbers' hole, being the first successful attempt made to enter the upper chambers from the subterranean chamber, then the only open section of the pyramid. mr. dupr bases his conclusion upon the fact that the well is merely a rough hole and the grotto an irregular chamber, without any evidence of the architectural precision with which the remainder of the structure was erected. the diameter of the well also precludes the possibility of its having been dug downward; it must have been gou

and elixir of life; such is the problem to be resolved, in order to accomplish this desire and realize this dream. like all the mysteries of magism, the secrets of "the great work" have a threefold signification; they are religious, philosophical, and natural. the philosophal gold, in religion, is the absolute and supreme reason: in philosophy, it is the truth; in visible nature, the sun; in the subterranean and mineral world, the most perfect and pure gold. it is for this that the pursuit of the great work is called the search for the absolute; and the work itself, the work of the sun. all the masters of the science admit that it is impossible to attain the material results, unless there are found in the two higher degrees all the analogies of the universal medicine and of the philosopha

faithful antigone, who had returned to thebes on the death of her father, could not endure that the body of her brother should remain unburied. she therefore bravely disregarded the orders of the king, and endeavoured to give sepulture to the remains of polynices. when creon discovered that his commands had been set at defiance, he inhumanly condemned the devoted maiden to be entombed alive in a subterranean vault [276]but retribution was at hand. his son, hamon, who was betrothed to antigone, having contrived to effect an entrance into the vault, was horrified to find that antigone had hanged herself by her veil. feeling that life without her would be intolerable, he threw himself in despair on his own sword, and after solemnly invoking the malediction of the gods on the head of his fath

ROBERT KIRK WALKER BETWEEN WORLDS
