that spark of the higher in the magician which wishes to unite the lower with itself. unless therefore the magician be first anointed with this oil, all his work will be wasted and evil. this oil is compounded of four substances. the basis of all is the oil of the olive. the olive is, traditionally, the gift of minerva, the wisdom of god, the logos. in this are dissolved three other oils; oil of myrrh, oil of cinnamon, oil of galangal. the myrrh is attributed to binah, the great mother, who is both the understanding of the magician and that sorrow and compassion which results from the contemplation of the universe. the cinnamon represents tiphereth, the sun- the son, in whom glory and suffering are identical. the galangal represents both kether and malkuth, the first and the last, the one

the universe. the cinnamon represents tiphereth, the sun- the son, in whom glory and suffering are identical. the galangal represents both kether and malkuth, the first and the last, the one and the many, since in this oil they are one. these oils taken together represent therefore the whole tree of life. the ten sephiroth are blended into the perfect gold. this oil cannot be prepared from crude myrrh, cinnamon, and galangal. the attempt to do so only gives a brown mud with which the oil will not mix. these substances must be themselves refined into pure oils before the final combination. this perfect oil is most penetrating and subtle. gradually it will spread itself, a glistening film, over every object in the temple. each of these objects will then flame in the light of the lamp. this

en the prototype for the classical myth of the phoenix, a creature of which there was never more than one at a time. in the fifth century bc, the greek writer herodotus claimed to have visited heliopolis and been told about a marvelous red-gold bird known as a phoenix. this bird was said to visit the temple of the sun at heliopolis every 500 years carrying the ashes of its parent inside an egg of myrrh. it was presumably from this egg that the next phoenix would eventually hatch. see also atum; birds; primeval mound; ra references and further reading: r. t. rundle clark. the phoenix. in myth and symbol in ancient egypt. london: 1959, 245 249. s. quirke. benu bird of ra, the phoenix of egypt. in the cult of ra sun-worship in ancient egypt. london: 2001, 27 30. primary sources: pt 600; ct 76

these things they whispered to one another; for though in the granite city there is no laughter or song, the stern men sometimes look to the karthian hills in the spring and think of the lutes of distant oonai whereof travellers have told. and thinking thus, they bade the stranger stay and sing in the square before the tower of mlin, though they liked not the colour of his tattered robe, nor the myrrh in his hair, nor his chaplet of vine-leaves, nor the youth in his golden voice. at evening iranon sang, and while he sang an old man prayed and a blind man said he saw a nimbus over the singer's head. but most of the men of teloth yawned, and some laughed and some went to sleep; for iranon told nothing useful, singing only his memories, his dreams, and his hopes "i remember the twilight, the

o sir francis bacon's use of the "wild boar" in his cryptic symbolism. adonis was originally an androgynous deity who represented the solar power which in the winter was destroyed by the evil principle of cold--the boar. after three days (months) in the tomb, adonis rose triumphant on the 25th day of march, amidst the acclamation of his priests and followers "he is risen" adonis was born out of a myrrh tree. myrrh, the symbol of death because of its connection with the process of embalming, was one of the gifts brought by the three magi to the manger of jesus. in the mysteries of adonis the neophyte passed through the symbolic death of the god and "raised" by the priests, entered into the blessed state of redemption made possible by the sufferings of adonis. nearly all authors believe adon

e benediction. the phoenix clement, one of the ante-nic an fathers, describes, in the first century after christ, the peculiar nature and habits of the phoenix, in this wise "there is a certain bird which is called a phoenix. this is the only one of its kind and lives five hundred years. and when the time of its dissolution draws near that it must die, it builds itself a nest of frankincense, and myrrh, and other spices, into which, when the time is fulfilled, it enters and dies. but as the flesh decays a certain kind of worm is produced, which, being nourished by the juices of the dead bird, brings forth feathers. then, when it has acquired strength, it takes up that nest in which are the bones of its parent, and bearing these it passes from the land of arabia into egypt, to the city call

ct. thus, we are taught in the talmud that there are fifty ggates h of binah, i.e, fifty levels of understanding divinity. binah is the principle sefirah of the intellect, in which the insight of chochmah is developed into a full mental construction and world-view. when the mature understanding of binah permeates all ten sefirot, we have 50 x 10= 500; this is why there are five hundred weights of myrrh in the anointing oil. fragrant cinnamon is weighed out a half at a time because even though it is associated with [only one sefirah] gevurah, there is also an aspect of the name elokim associated with the sefirah of hod [this name elokim, however [is not counted] because it is considered part of z feir anpin. thus, we count only 3 names elokim: that of binah, that of gevurah, and that of mal
